Funky Jerk was started by two brothers, born and raised on the beautiful island of Jamaica, home of the famous jerk. Their parents always taught them to show their love for others through food. They had a very strong community who celebrated and comforted each other through laughter, red stripe beer, rum punch and the beautiful aromas of jerk. Elton Harris not only raised his biological children but was a father to all. His jerk is always a conversation starter and is ultimately what created their community in Hellshire heights. Funky Jerk would not exist without him and his famous jerk sauce which has the perfect combination of flavors and will enhance any jerk dish you eat. From Portland to Portmore, Jerk is the most popular street food of Jamaica. Jerk is a complex blend of seasonings, including scotch bonnet peppers, scallions, thyme, all spice and many other herbs and spices. Like barbecue from the American South, jerk today is a remnant of the ancestry of the early Jamaican settlers, when Maroons would transform tough cuts of meat into tender, delicious dishes. It is said that the word jerk, stems from the Spanish word charqui, meaning dried strips of meat. The Maroons would blend an array of spices and herbs that they would later use to marinate and cook the wild that they hunted which led to the famous “Jamaican Jerk”.
